Change feels hard. I get it. Often, it feels hard because we're going about it the wrong way.

Our tendency is to focus on changing our actions and our choices. What this approach overlooks is the simple fact that our thoughts drive our choices.

Conscious or subsconscious, a series of thoughts predede our choices and talk us into or out of whatever decision we make.

If you don't change your thoughts, it will continue to be mighty hard to change your choices.

Of course that begs the question: HOW?

Most of us feel like our thoughts arise so quickly & automatically that they're nearly impossible to change. It sounds nice in theory "just think differently!" but how do we turn that into a daily practice?

That is the entire focus of today's practical episode with modern mindfulness expert and host of the Mind Love podcast, Melissa Monte. Don't miss this one!

For years, I've been a huge fan of journaling. Recently, I've made a shift in the way I journal that has completely changed the game. It's made me happier, more present, more confident and more productive. A few of my Masters Club members have begun journaling this way, too, and today you'll hear from both of us.

How are we journaling? What does it look like? How did we start?

One of the reasons people struggle to change is that they aren't paying attention. I can relate to that!

At 350+ pounds, living paycheck to paycheck, I didn’t want to pay attention.

I didn’t want to see my body.

I didn’t want to acknowledge my food choices.

I didn’t want to acknowledge my inconsistency

I didn’t want to look too closely at anything - my bank account, how much debt I had, the state of my marriage, what I looked like naked.

None of it. And, not suprisingly, nothing good was happening.

When we don't pay attention, we drift.

We never drift someplace amazing.

I am certain this type of journaling will help you create change. It's not about accountability, it's about action.

https://primalpotential.com/559/

I think it's so powerful that I'm going to create an identity journal for the next 12 Weeks to Transformation! You can get on the wait list here.

The answer isn't always the truth.

Today we're talking about two different but very deceptive thought patterns that keep people from creating change in their lives.

One is the mindset of "I know", where you dismiss information, strategies and tools you're already familiar with instead of grabbing the opportunity presented by the reminder to take action on them. It really doesn't matter if you "you know", what matters is whether or not you're doing those things.

The second is the mindset of "I don't know" - a pattern of letting yourself off the hook and letting uncertainty be a stopping point. It should be a starting point.

If there is a gap between when you know and what you do, this episode is one you can't miss!

Do you rationalize choices that hold you back?

Is it possible that you're actually telling rational lies?

Just because it's your answer doesn't mean it's the truth.

In today's episode, we're looking at rational lies, times when we rationalize and how to break the patterns that keep us from living the lives we want.

First we make our stories, then our stories make us.

We are story tellers. You are a master story teller. Whether you're conscious of it or not, you make about stories about everything that happens around you, about every choice you make, every single day.

When I say "stories" that DOESN'T mean you made something up.

Your story is the meaning you attach to your experiences.

Your story can take you to new heights or it can overwhelm you and lead to you to isolate yourself and feel defeated.

In today's episode, we're taking a look at the stories you tell yourself and how you can stand on the shoulders of your story and allow it to take you to new heights!

Today's episode features pieces of a powerful conversation I had with story-expert Marlo Ellis - founder and visionary behind The Uncommon Woman.

I used to think in terms of what I didn't want. I didn't want to be so overweight. I didn't want to overeat so frequently. I didn't want to feel so out of control. I didn't want to be unhappy, lonely or isolated. I didn't want to have so much debt. You get the picture.

If I had to choose a sound effect to represent how I felt at that point in my life, it would have been a groan.

Ugh. Exasperation. Frustration. Resignation. Irritation. Disappointment.

At least once a day, someone asks me how much weight I've lost or how much debt I paid off. Totally fair questions and I'm happy to answer them (except I don't own a scale and don't worry about my present body weight.)

Here's the thing though - what I've gained is so much more interesting.

https://primalpotential.com/555/

This shift from "less" to "more" is what we're diving into today. It's not just a more peaceful perspective, we'll talk about why it's a more effective one, too!

I've been thinking a lot about the life & business I want to create in 2019. I shared a lot of those details in episode 549 of the podcast. I missed out on a LOT of my life. There are decades, relationships and experiences that I can't get back. In saying "yes" to food, saying "no" to happiness and relationships, I destroyed a lot of relationships and experiences. I don't want to live that way naymore. In fact, I refuse to live that way.

But here's the very important thing: it's not just about physical health. Often, that gets all the priority. What we eat. Our body composition. Our exercise routine.

Today we are talking about another very, very, very important component and the shift I'm making in my own life.

I used to use stress, pressure, chaos and crisis as reasons to not take care of myself. As soon as life got hard, I'd stop trying. I'd stop making good food choices, I'd stop going to the gym, I'd stop being financially responsible. I'd check out.

I'll be the first to admit that it's not always easy to do the right things when it feels like you're in crisis mode, but there are a few things I knew for sure:

  • Take care of yourself makes the chaos dramatically more manageable
  • Not taking care of yourself makes it dramatically more difficult to manage
  • It is possible to make great choices when life is hard
    It is worth it

Last week was straight CHAOS for me. I closed on a new property and there were innumerable hoops to jump through at the last minute. I moved into it. I moved out of my tiny house the same day. My boyfriend moved in with me. A new tenant moved into the tiny house. My 98-year-old grandmother was in the hospital and required surgery. My first book launched. The 12 WT launched. Plus, I had my normal workload, which is quite heavy to begin with.

I was determined to not only get through the week, but to enjoy it and to take impeccable care of myself through it all. In today's podcast, I'm sharing my own strategies for navigating chaos without crisis and without putting self-care on the back burner.

At long, long last, my first book - Chasing Cupcakes - is finally available!

It would have been easy to write a book about nutrition, hormones or fat loss, but that's not the book I wanted to write. I wanted to write a book that hadn't already been written. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of amazing books about nutrition, hormones and fat loss. Besides, that wasn't the book I needed when I was deep in my own personal struggle with obesity, binge eating, excuses, exceptions, doubt, delay and debt.

In the thick of my decades-long struggle, I knew exactly what to do. I could have talked for hours, if not days, about all the changes I could make to lose weight, get healthy, pay off my debt and everything in between. I didn't need more information.

For me, the problem was that I wasn't doing all the things I knew to do. I knew how to lose weight, in theory, but what I didn't know was how to get myself to do the work. I didn't know how to end the excuses and exceptions. I knew how to get out of debt - I had thousands of strategies and action-plans. What I didn't know was how to consistently get myself to do the work.

That's the book I needed. So, that's the book I wrote.

Today, I'm excited to share with you the story behind Chasing Cupcakes and to answer all your questions about the book and the writing process! I have been waiting for this moment for so long and I hope you love the book as much as I do!

What is my food philosophy? What is yours? Do you have one? Are you living like it?

I talk a lot about food and share a lot of the way I eat and the way I don't eat, but today I want to share with you exactly what my food philosophy is.

It's not about macros. It's not about calories. It's not even about fat loss. You might be surprised by a few things and I'm so excited to share it with you!

https://primalpotential.com/551/

Before we dive into the episode: today I shared an opportunity for you to take a sneak peak inside the winter 12 Weeks to Transformation! While the podcast is mostly about information and strategy, the 12 WT is all about action. It's about getting off the sidelines, into the game, and returning to action every day. In addition to weekly challenges, a guided daily journal, a private Facebook group and weekly live Q&As, I also share short daily coaching audio messages to help you return to your intentions each day, no matter what's going on in your life. Want to experience 5 days of those short coaching messages? Share your email address here and you'll get coaching messages right to your inbox for the next 5 days!

My Food Philosophy Includes:

  • Food choices hinge on whether or not I'm hungry (whether or not my body needs fuel)
  • Food isn't good or bad - take the emotion & drama out of it
  • Don't major in the minors
  • Eat real food
  • How I feel is greater than how I look
  • Short term strategies deliver short term results - no interest in anything short term
  • Pay close attention to how my choices make me feel and how my body responds
  • I rely on my body for my answers more than anyone else's opinion

Today I'm sharing my coaching method with you. This isn't just how I work with clients, it's how I coach myself. I'm not on a diet and I don't "put" my clients on a diet.

I'm not into guilt, drama, negativity, sacrifice or an obsession with a "goal weight".

Today I'll share with you my thoughts on paying attention, aligning your thoughts with what you want, creating change via evolution, not revolution, improving your outlook and constantly adjusting.

If you are ready to do things differently and create permanent change (while enjoying the process), this is your episode.

You know what to do but you aren't consistently doing it. You're super clear on the problem, but you aren't holding yourself accountable to taking action on creating the solution.

You think about it all the time. You wish things were different. Maybe you're frustrated or sometimes feel disappointed in yourself and your choices.

I have those conversations every single day. This week in particular, I had about dozens of phone calls with current clients and there were 3 strategies that kept coming up again and again. These are strategies to help you get out of your way that make change dramatically (and immediately) easier!

If you feel like you're usually the primary thing holding you back - this episode is totally for you!

We are so quick to spread ideas that are negative. We're quick to share about the problems in our lives or the things that upset us, and while I think being open is valuable, I also think it's high time to start spreading some ideas that make us better - that make us happier and healthier while improving all the relationships in our lives (especially the relationships we have with ourselves). How's that for a big 'ol run-on sentence?

In today's episode, I'm sharing 10 powerful thoughts I strongly believe are ideas worth spreading and I hope we'll do just that! I hope we'll practice them, we'll embrace them and we'll share them with people we love by way of our own example.

Do you have an idea you believe is worth spreading? Share it with me by tagging me on Instagram with a picture of this episode playing on your device and tell me what idea you believe is worth spreading!

Here's to creating change, one moment at a time, by embracing these 10 ideas worth spreading!

Dec 20, 2018

Not long ago, someone asked me if I'd provide transcripts for the 12 WT weekly challenge webinars. Then, I got a similar question about the format of the 12 Weeks to Transformation. My answer to both requests was the same...

"Is the information in the 12 Weeks to Transformation all videos? If so, is there any way to have a transcript of the content? I don't retain information very well when it is presented verbally. I do much better with the written word."

Here's the deal, my friend. We aren't here to learn. We're here to change. There's a really big difference in those two approaches and many people follow the familiar "learning" path, failing to realize that it's not the same as the "changing" path.

We're diving into that in today's episode of the podcast and I'll be sharing how I coach clients through the changing process (not the learning process) in my 12 Weeks to Transformation groups.

Insecurity. Fear of what others think. We're going there today, not to have a theoretical discussion, but to talk about strategies and perspectives that will help each one of us stop letting those feelings limit our lives.

It's a choice. We feel those feelings, think those thoughts and face those fears but we don't need to submit to them.

Today I have the great pleasure of talking with Jimmy Moore and his wife Christine (a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner) about their newest book, Real Food Keto.

First and foremost, this episode is about far more than ketogenic diets. Even if you aren't a ketogenic eater, you want to listen to this episode.

I was so excited to see a book come on the market that focuses on real food and nutrient density. Sure, there are lots of bars and shakes out there. There are an increasing number of keto cookies and brownies and paleo desserts. In fact, there are so many of these type of things that a lot of people are losing sight of HEALTH.

For the sake of health, longevity, mood, energy and overall wellness, our food choices must be about more than impact on our waist line and overall flavor. Nutrient density matters.

I could rant about this for days and weeks, but instead, let's dive into the conversation with Jimmy & Christine. We have a thoughtful conversation about dietary individuality, myths surrounding ketogenic diets and the critical importance of nutrient density.

If you have questions about this book or want to dive deeper into any of the topics, be sure to leave a comment and let me know!

Have you ever heard of the first rule of holes?

I'm happy to share it with you. The first rule of holes is: stop digging.

If you want to create a change in your life, the first thing you have to do is change the way you think. If you want to create a solution in your life, you have to stop arguing for, justifying and reinforcing the problem.

In today's episode, we'll talk through examples and strategies. Don't miss it! If you have follow up questions, be sure to leave a comment here on the show notes page, email me or direct message me on instagram!

Fact: We all get older.

Myth: Getting older means increased body fat, decreased energy, memory issues, joint pain and chronic illness.

You can age well. You can get or stay lean. You can maintain energy and cognitive function.

Fact: We all have genes.

Myth: Genes determine how you age.

We can control the expression of our genes. We can turn gene expression on or off, up or down, by the way we eat, sleep, move and stress.

It's been a long time since we've done a book review episode but that's exactly what we're doing today! I highly recommend Dr. Sara Gottfried's newest book: Younger.

I'll be sharing some of the highlights from the book along with what changes I'll be making in my own life as a result of reading it.

I'm not different from most people in that regard. However, I might be a little different in how I respond to them.

I hope everyone listens to this episode! My friend: once you go beyond the wonderful age of 30, you will lose muscle mass unless you intentionally and consistently work to maintain or increase it.

This rate of muscle loss can range from 3-8% per decade! Think about that! You could have 16% less muscle mass by the age of 50!

Why does this matter?

Contrary to popular belief, this isn't just a cosmetic issue related to body composition. It's not just about strength, balance and mobility.

We need to take action to prevent muscle loss and faciliate muscle building in order to stay healthy, prevent diabetes, have a healthy metabolism and much, more more.

Sarcopenia, or age-related muscle wasting, is both reversible and preventable. Today we will explore the systemic impact of sarcopenia on your health and discuss what you can do about it! Don't miss this episode!

What's your bliss point? That's the conversation I want to have with you as we go into the holiday season.

For me, feeling amazing during the holidays has as much to do with my mindset as it does to do with my choices. Probably even more. I used to go into the holidays with a ton of anxiety. I was worried about the food that would be available. I worried about overeating and I worried about restriction and missing out.

It didn't work. I wasn't happy. I wasn't enjoying myself.

Now, I think about my bliss point. The intersection of enjoyment and feeling amazing.

This is actually a common marketing term!

A bliss point is the amount of consumption that maximizes a customer's satisfaction for a particular good or service. For example, the bliss point of ice cream might be one small bowl and the bliss point for travel might be one trip a month. A customer who exceeds their bliss point may feel stressed, unsatisfied or regretful. Bliss point is purely related to a customer's needs and wants as opposed to budget. It has implications for product design, customer experience, diversification and pricing. (Simplicable.com)

As you go into a holiday, a family meal or even a weekend or evening out - what is the intersection of feeling great about your choices and fully enjoying yourself?
